wireless notebook adapter connecting to a router?

I have a desktop computer at home upstairs. I just bought a laptop with wireless ability. If i buy a wireless notebook adapter, will it be able to connect to the internet upstairs? If my laptop is sitting next to the computer upstairs, I can connect. Please help I am clueless! Thanks!

What you need is a wireless router to provide wireless internet to the laptop. There is setup involved once you get the router but they all come with instructions on how to do the basic setup. A laptop with wireless "ability" already has a wireless notebook adapter built in, it can receive wireless signal, and a wireless router sends the wireless signal to the laptop.

  2. The distance you can get out of your router and laptop combination depends on many things, some hardware is better than others and all of them will be affected by conditions in the house like other wireless devices, microwaves, thick walls, etc.

If you can connect up-stairs but not down-stairs I would say it’s safe to bet that you’ll need to purchase some sort of wireless extender which can connect to your wireless and redistribute it, obviously this will have to be positioned in an ideal place to achieve both the connection to the router and close enough to the down-stairs location where you use the laptop for it to connect. Before you buy anything though make sure you try different positions for the router to see if that helps.

  3. Buy you a D-Link router and and follow the CD Installation disk instructions. Very, very simple!
