how to set a network at home? what is the best way to set a network to connect my laptops, PCs with a printer?

i know how to connect the printer with any pc of course but i have like 2 PCs and 5 laptops in this house and i need all of them connecting with a printer.. so do i need a wirless Router? to connect the all computers with the router and then connecting the router with the printer ?? or someone know a better way ?

The best way is to have a print server connected to your printer if it has a network adapter on-board. If it connects with a USB cable you will need to connect the printer to a PC and share it and keep the PC powered on all the time for sharing to work,

  2. You are on the right track. You can connect the printer to the wifi IF it actually has that added ability; not all do. If it doesn’t and you don’t want to buy a replacement that does, then your alternative is to share the printer off of one of the systems.
1.) Start -> Settings -> Printers. Right click on the printer in question and look for a selection "SHARING…" (If you don’t see that or if it’s grayed out go to 1a). Click on Sharing. This will allow you to assign a ’share name’ to the printer.
1a.) Right click on My Network Places -> Properties -> right click the active connection. This will bring up the various services that are running with that connection. (this all assumes XP O/S) In this list if you don’t see File and Printer Sharing, you will need to add it in via this interface. Go back to 1.
2.) This part can get tricky due to some settings which may inhibit some types of network traffic e.g. Software firewall, router table, various Window settings. Anyways, on each of the PC’s The simplest way is to go into the Printers folder, click Add Printer and then Browse the Network and find it. Another way is to know the NAME of the computer that is doing the sharing (RClick on My Computer, Computer Name (it’s NOT the description)) and on the other PC’s click Start -> Run -> \\<computer name> <enter>. THis should pop up a box with that computer’s shared resources. RClick on the printer and select Connect.

I’ve had a variety of little issues when doing this, so a definite answer is difficult. I hope your systems present less of an issue. This all assumes XP for Vista <shudder> I added a link from MS.
