Why wont my Sony Vaio Lap Top connect to the internet?

My son has left his sony vaio lap top at home. It will not connect to the internet. When I check all the network connections it tells me that it is connected to my BT home hub but when I open IE I receive an error message stating that Internet Explorer cannot open the web page. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It may be conencted to the home hub, but is the home hub connected to your internet service provider? (Are other computers on the home hub,, and working properly?)

If not, unplug the home hub power supply, plug it back in, let it reconnect, then restart the computer.

  1. Possibly Spyware or a Virus.

Does it connect from any other location? School, work, Friends place?

If not, definitely check it for spyware / malware. You may need to use another computer just to get some software to use on this one. The product you want to use is called Malwarebytes.

Just Google that and you will get it. Download it. Copy it to a USB stick and install it on your Sony. Do a full scan – remove anything it finds. It is relaible software, I use it regularly.

On the other hand, If it DOES connect elsewhere, your Firewall may be blocking internet access at your home. You may need to check your Firewall software in your Sony, to see if you had at some stage dis-allowed access whilst at your home.

If you can find your Firewall software, try turning it off, just for a minute, to see if that allows you access to the internet. If it does, then you know that the Firewall needs adjusting.
