What causes my car to change revs when idling, jump and lose power at times, and overheat?

This started happening not long a go. I was told it may the head cyclinder gasket but am not sure. Today i found something loose under the bonnet. the spark plug wire to one of the cyclinders was not connected correctly, could this have had something to do with it? and if so why?

no power to 1 cylinder means the car was working handicapped and would act strange like all of above you mentioned
