I have problems connecting to the internet?

I have a 8Mbps broadband connection but it keeps telling me that I have limited or no connection. The modem is working, my ethernet port is working and the firewall is not blocking access, neither is my internet settings altered in any way. What could I do on the computer to get back the? connection?

Step 1
At any sign of disconnection, the first step is always to check the physical connection and devices. Look at LED indicators of the router and check if there are abnormalities. All lights should be green. Red light means there is problem. Usually, there are three steady LED lights… the “Power”, the “Wireless”, and the “DSL”. All else should be blinking which indicates data transfers.

Step 2
Restarting the router should almost always solve the problem. Turn off the router and unplug the power cord for 10 seconds before plugging it again. Check that the telephone line is securely connected to the router. If problem still exist, it’s time to call for tech support.

Step 3
If you use wireless to connect to the router, then try to plug in the UTP cable on your router and computer if it will solve the connection problem. If it did, then there is something wrong with the wireless device itself installed on the computer. Try shutting down the computer and turn it on again to initialize everything.

Step 4
Open a command prompt and type in “ping 192.168.1.1” and hit enter. The IP address 192.168.1.1 is your router. If the ping returns a Reply, then you have good connection with your router. If it returns “Request time out”, then there is no connection between the computer and the router.

Step 5
On the command prompt again, type in “ping www.google.com –t” or any URL on the internet. Normally, you will see uninterrupted Reply with time=27ms and TTL always have the same number. If the ping returns “Destination host unreachable”, then there is problem with your router connecting outside. This may be due to the connection from the telephone line going outside or the Internet Service Provider itself. If so, then it is time to call for tech support.

This troubleshooting tips can help you narrow down the problem and even if there is the need to call for tech support, it will greatly help you with the conversation with the technician.

  4. Follow the instruction below:
    Step 1
Make sure your computer is not too far away from your wireless router and you have a good signal. By placing your mouse pointer over the wireless connection icon, located in the bottom right corner of your taskbar, you can check to see if your signal strength is good. Anything less than a good signal can cause intermittent connections. SOLUTION: You will need to relocate your wireless router closer to your computer.

    Step 2
If you have a 2.4 GHz wireless home phone, take notice if you lose the internet connection when placing or receiving a call. These wireless phones interfere with wireless routers because they both operate on 2.4GHz frequencies. If this happens you need to power down the router and then turn it back on. This will happen occasionally but not all of the time. SOLUTION: (1) upgrade your wireless phone to 5.8GHz, (2) use a corded phone or (3) use a wired internet connection to your router.

    Step 3
If steps 1 and 2 did not solve your internet connection, borrow a friend’s laptop with a wireless card and see if their laptop can connect to the internet. Be sure to set your friends wireless connection settings to the same settings that your wireless card is set to. If your friend’s laptop connects to the internet then you may have a bad wireless card. Try reconfiguring your wireless card settings before going out to purchase an external wireless card.

    Step 4
If your friend’s laptop can’t connect to the internet, try resetting the router to the factory defaults. Change the settings on the wireless card to the same settings as the factory default on the wireless router. If this works you are back in business. If it does not work for either computer, the wireless portion of your router is bad. SOLUTION: Purchase a new router or use a wired connection to one of your router ports.
