When connecting home theater to 5.1 surround sound do I need to connect each component to reciever then tv?

Now I have all components (BluRay, Xbox, Cable) connected via HDMI to my tv and my tv connected to my reciever using those regular red and white cables.

Usually all components connect through the receiver. This includes your cable input.
The receiver has an output for HDMI to go the TV. Use that to hook up TV. If you don’t have HDMI on TV, then you need to use those cable.

  2. If your receiver does not have HDMI, then this is the best possible connection. For the sound, if your receiver has digital optical connections I would recommend using that instead of the red and white cables as you need this type of cable to get full 5.1 surround. With red and white stereo cables you will just get the 2.0 sound going through your receiver’s pro logic/pro logic 2 decoder which simply divides the 2.0 sound amongst the other speakers.
