A splitter should work you just won't be able to use both devices at the same time.
References :
i use a splitter and it works fine. i never have to get out of my chair to use it. a switch would be so much harder.
References :
Dont use a splitter. It wont work.

Look at the optical output on your devices even when they are just powered on. They both provide light. If you use this "splitter" - the light from both will combine and your receiver wont be able to work from the device you want.

You need a optical switch. The one from Monoprice is less than $7 and I have seen this same item at large electronic stores and perhaps at Radio Shack.
References :
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2946&seq=1&format=2

You can use this inexpensive piece as a splitter/combiner. It will be a lot easier than moving plugs around and it's 6 bucks!
