My dad is having problems connecting to his dsl network at his office.?

His normal procedure for connecting to the interent is doubleclicking his SBC DSL shortcut, clicking OK to his user name and password, then he’s connected. But I borrowed his laptop and connected it to my DSL line. I had to adjust a setting to Automatically find a IP address. And then I could connect. Did I have to adjust something so that he can connect now? Thanks.

He was using a static ip for work, if you changed it to automatically pull an address then it wipes those settings. Depending on the setup of the VPN it may be looking or only allowing that certain static ip to access the VPN. Hopefully you wrote the settings down or have the number for his DSL connection to call and find out what the IP settings were.

You may be dealing with having disabled the SLIP/PPP over ethernet protocol.

it could be that he needs to use a specific IP instead of automatically finding one. You should try to undo whatever you did. He should be able to call SBC (AT&T now) and they’ll streighten him out.

  3. Hmmmm. If you have it set to automatically find an IP address, then you must have a router or computer that is acting as a DHCP server. If he doesn’t have a DHCP server, then it’s possible that changing that setting broke it for him. The way to check for this problem of not having a valid IP address is to open the Command Prompt and type "ipconfig". If there is no IP address or an IP address that starts with 169.254, then it is screwed up.

You’d need to either get him a router with a DHCP server or more simply changing the IP address setting from automatic back to a static address – usually something like 192.168.1.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Reinstalling the software from SBC might do the trick as well. Good luck!

  4. Verify the connection is connected. Oh, by the way, PPPoE authentication should take place at the router. Never mind that. Just open a command box and do a
    arp -d
    then
    ipconfig /release
    then
    ipconfig /renew
    then
    ipconfig /registerdns

    This should do it.
    Or
Power cycle the network by unplugging all items on the network and rebooting PCs. No 20 ft phone lines on the dsl modem and no filters on that line.

if your modem is the same as your dad’s, you create another dsl profile. go to Network Connections, and select Create a new connection. follow the steps ( select ‘Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and pw’…use your dad’s ISP name, his username and pw and connect). by the way, creating a dsl profile is applicable for modems like speedstream 5100a (with 4 lights), speedstream 5360, 5260…

for modems like speedstream 4100 and 5100b (with 5 lights), go to the modem address (192.168.0.1) and sign in using your dad’s user id (include the domain..e.g. @sbcglobal.net) and pw and connect. when you get a confirmation that youre connected, youre ready to go =)
