What you can do is to set up a VPN connection. There will be no additional cost on your Internet plans for this. In order for you to set up a VPN connection, you will need a VPN router for one of your homes and a VPN software (e.g. VPN Client) for the other home. The only downside for this is that the house with the VPN software will not be able to connect to the house with the VPN router unless this house initiates the connection. But if you want both houses to connect without waiting for one to initiate the connection, you need to install two VPN routers (one for each home) to set up a VPN tunnel.

For a more detailed instruction go to http://www.supportrix.com/SUPPORTRIX/Main.php?do=LearnMore.

To learn more about VPN, go to http://www.alliancedatacom.com/how-vpn-works.asp and http://computer.howstuffworks.com/vpn.htm
References :
http://www.supportrix.com/SUPPORTRIX/Main.php?do=LearnMore

If you want you can buy a wireless modem in which case you can just take it with you, just to tell you they sort of look like a USB.
