Connecting to broadband internet?

I already have internet connection, and in order to use if on my new laptop, do i need to install something on my computer, or just connecting the network cable of the modem with my computer will begin the internet connection?

That should work, but I suggest you get yourself a wireless router for your laptop, they are cheap and very easy to install. Best of all, you can have your desktop connected and be roaming around in your home wirelessly at the same time. .
