Help on connecting basic yahoo DSL router 2 wire connection to a wireless router?

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by admin

I have a laptop and desk top networked and the new router is Linksys 2.4GHz broadband router

I actually just did this, suprized how easy 2-wire picked up the Router. I setup the router with a direct ethernet wire conection on my old computer (open a web browser then go to 192.168.1.1, turn on wireless, select a security lvl- recommend the low lvl of WEP) generate a key. I had to download the drivers for the 2wire usb wireless card as I didn’t have the disc. But then I just searched for wireless networks, found the broadcasted one from my router, then added the wireless key.

Hey dude I connect to the Internet the same way except I got a different ISP. What you have to do is
Go to
1. System > Networking
You will see a list of Networking devices like
Wireless Connection, Ethernet Connection, Modem Connection.
2. Double click on Wireless Connection.
3. Click Enable this connection.
4. Select the Network by the putting in the Network Name.
If you got WEP enabled (The password to access your network) Enter it. Also make sure you select what type of key it is.. Usually it is in ASCII
Select DHCP if your router is set to randomly allocating Computers with IP addresses
click OK
Now back again in the Windoe showing the different Devices. make sure the Wireless Device Is Activated
NOw at the bottom of the window select the default gateway device is eth1 or eth0 depending on which one the wireless device is assigned to..

Plug the network cable from the DSL Modem into the "uplink" port of the router. Plug your computer’s network cable into one of the other ports on the router. Done.

Trouble connecting with DSL wirelessly?

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 by admin

When wired, it works just fine. Wirelessly, it doesn’t work at all. I’m using AT&T Yahoo! DSL (with a 2WIRE base station). When trying to connect wirelessly, my computer says it has "a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet". No other computer around the house works wirelessly either. Help and tips appreciated. Thanks.

When you wire them, your local area connection would be enabled. You need to go to your connections and make sure that local area connection is disabled and Wireless Connection is enabled. Then it will automatically search for the signal and trigger it.

Also, just because you have a router, doesnt mean it will be wireless. Make sure you have a wireless router and make sure your computer also has WIFI capability or has a wireless adapter/card.

My dad is having problems connecting to his dsl network at his office.?

Posted on March 1st, 2010 by admin

His normal procedure for connecting to the interent is doubleclicking his SBC DSL shortcut, clicking OK to his user name and password, then he’s connected. But I borrowed his laptop and connected it to my DSL line. I had to adjust a setting to Automatically find a IP address. And then I could connect. Did I have to adjust something so that he can connect now? Thanks.

He was using a static ip for work, if you changed it to automatically pull an address then it wipes those settings. Depending on the setup of the VPN it may be looking or only allowing that certain static ip to access the VPN. Hopefully you wrote the settings down or have the number for his DSL connection to call and find out what the IP settings were.

I have connected everything just like the CD instructed but when I go to test my connection it says it cannot connect. My DSL light than becomes blinking red and green. Everything appears connected is there something in the set up that should be different I followed the default settings. Should I have used static isp instead of the DSL with name and password? Please help. Thank You

Got to have a static IP address on that router!!

DSL Connecting Problem?

Posted on February 25th, 2010 by admin

I have Verizon DSL service with a Westell 6100 Dual Connect modem. The only way I can get a good DSL connection is when the phone is off the hook. As soon as I hang up the phone I lose the DSL connection. Verizon does not dtect a problem on their end. It seems the modem works OK because I am OK like right now when my phone is off the hook. My cheap Radio Shack line detector shows no problem with my lines. Any ideas? Thanks. It is real aggravating and frustrating. Also can not clear the "NS Cache" when I run tests like the Windows diagnose thing as well.

It sounds like you may not have the special line filters that DSL providers usually give you to attach to the phone line. You should put one of these in between the DSL modem and the phone line. Also attach one to each phone in your home, so that if the phone is being used it won’t disrupt the DSL.

What are my options for connecting two computers to one dsl line?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 by admin

I have two computers, one upstairs and one downstairs, both connected to dsl. The one upstairs is connected through the dsl 2wire router and the one downstairs is connected using a wireless usb. My question is, is there another option to connecting the second computer directly. Can I just purchase another router and plug it into the phone line?
I don’t know if I’m being clear enough… I don’t want to plug both computers into one router, nor do I want to make one wireless.

Another router will be a suitable resolve, as will a switch if you fancy saving yourself some money, the functionality of a router (to route IP’s through the internet) is only needed once in your home so whilst it will fix your problem, theres no need to get one if a switch does the job just as well, heck, so will a hub (I’d recommend against a hub as they’re a tenth of the speed of routers and switches).
