If so you’ll need a router. Setup the router. Turn on the wireless function on the laptop and search for wireless nodes.
Also make sure the laptop runs on the routers frequency, eg 802.11g is a frequency commonly used

In a windows system it will only let you see what has been shared out. In a similar fashion Unix variants will only let you look a stuff according to your permission settings.
