I have D-Link model WBR-1310 and an Acer Aspire laptop. My nephew set up the router, and when I click on the network, it says "Connected", but it also says No Internet access. When I open up my browser, it says Unable to Connect…(I’m using my Ethernet cable now). How can I get wireless Internet access using this router? The signal strength is excellent, but no Interent. Thanks for your help.

2 possibilities…you’re not getting an internet signal from your service provider or the router has an encryption key that you haven’t entered.
Since you can see that it is "connected", there is no encryption since it would not connect without the proper key. But since it is "connected", you know that your wireless router and wireless card in your laptop are working OK. Most likely, your router has not gotten a proper IP address from your service provider (Comcast, Verizon, etc.), so the router cannot "talk" to the modem.
Here’s what to do…remove power from both the modem and the router. Wait about a minute for everything to "forget" their settings. Then re-power the modem. Wait 2 minutes until it reacquires a signal from the provider. Now be sure that the router is physically connected to the modem with an ethernet cable (looks like a phone cord but has larger end pieces). There is only one hole for the ethernet cable on the modem, but there are 5 holes on the router. Make sure the cable goes into the proper hole on the router. It’s the one next to the 4 holes but is usually a little farther away and has some color surrounding it to make it look a little different. The ethernet cable MUST go into this seperate hole, not one of the four. With the cable properly connected, turn on power to the router. It should acquire the proper IP address form the modem automatically. Wait about 2 minutes. then use your computer’s wireless software (right click on the tray icon for your wireless) to see available wireless systems. Chose your system…not a neighbor’s…and click on connect.
You may have to go thru this sequence a couple of times to get a good IP address. Especially with Comcast.

If you have a loopback connectionI(which you shouldnt)pull it off.
More then likely your firewall/router is blocking it (hardware).

An AP can extend the network’s capabilities to include wireless, but the AP doesnt have the "brain" to route data packets correctly. In essence, with an AP you are only extending virtual wires to an existing Router or Switch.

You are better off getting a WIRELESS ROUTER (such as the W54g) which can be used as a router, an AP or a Bridge device, however you configure it.

Best of luck to you!

Presumably you tried to use an Ethernet cable between an Ethernet port on the computer and one on a router or modem. Hardware-wise, that should work. But there is a fair amount of software configuration that needs to be done also. You can either crib the data from some machine which works properly on the modem, or call your internet service provider for the details.

I have a cable internet connection. And I used to have a router in the loop and was connected wirelessly and the internet speed was great. My sister had to take the router to her house, and now my computer is directly connected to the modem, and the internet speed is terribly slow. Could there be some kind of registry, driver, or network configuration problem that is causing this?

Here’s a quick fix:

Power off the modem, wait at least 2 minutes (This means unplug it from the wall).
Plug the modem back in after the 2 minutes (This will force a handshake between the provider and you computer).

Please feel free to contact me on messenger if you need more help.

I’m running on windows vista and have set up the VPN connection, but am unable to connect to the internet. I am able to connect to the wireless network. I have tried turning off my firewall and still nothing happene. I have been told by the IT department at my uni that I am unable to connect to the wireless internet connection at uni on windows vista, but was wondering if anyone knows a way around it?

Thanks in advance

If IT told you the VPN won’t work with Vista…they’re probably right.

You could downgrade your OS to XP.

Not really.. Best thing is check if your cables are properly plugged, in my case before, it got loose so I had to ask them to replace the cable. Check too if there’s something putting pressure on the cables, like a chair on top of it O_O

It doesnt work? Contact your ISP
