Trying to convince my mother it doesn’t cost extra no matter how many times you disconnect and reconnect. I might be wrong.

No.
They are generally "always on" connections. Unlike dial-up, which dials a phone number to make a connection, cable and dsl do not make phone calls and generally do not charge to make connections. They are always connected separately from the actual phone line. One minute of connection costs just as much as a thousand minutes. You can turn it on and off ad nauseam without additional charges.

My main goal is for file transfer but the easiest way I know how is by hyper terminal and it is no longer available in Windows Vista. The only thing we have to work with are phone modems. Is this possible?

How far does she live? If she already has Internet and you want to transfer files to her, you can try to buy webspace via FTP or something like that.

But if you want to physically share your Internet connection with her via a telephone modem from far away, that is illegal to share any Internet account with anyone.

We recently switched to Orange (from BT) and it has proved to be nothing but a nightmare. After waiting several weeks for our account to be activated we are now unable to connect.

The live box has yet to be delivered, but I have been trying to connect with my old speedtouch USB modem (both lights are green when we plug it in). I have entered our username & password and when I try to connect it gets up to the ‘verifying username and password’ and gets no further… remote computer not responding.

Any idea what the problem could be, and if there are any settings we need to change to get connected.

If you think you have a problem, my son took out a contract on a mobile phone with orange. After going on the Internet he was assured that Orange had 3 bar coverage of our post code. No way he got ziltch.
After much toing and froing to the shop and orange direct he had to cancel the contract.
The coverage map still shows that we have coverage….Not so. Advice cancel.

Ok I live in 2 different areas, about a 130km apart, I have my main internet plan at my home and a small simple plan in the other town. I travel between these two addresses fairly regularly.
My QUESTION is.. Can I connect to my larger internet plan from the other location, If yes HOW? and would any usage count on both plans or just the one im connecting to?

What you can do is to set up a VPN connection. There will be no additional cost on your Internet plans for this. In order for you to set up a VPN connection, you will need a VPN router for one of your homes and a VPN software (e.g. VPN Client) for the other home. The only downside for this is that the house with the VPN software will not be able to connect to the house with the VPN router unless this house initiates the connection. But if you want both houses to connect without waiting for one to initiate the connection, you need to install two VPN routers (one for each home) to set up a VPN tunnel.

For a more detailed instruction go to http://www.supportrix.com/SUPPORTRIX/Main.php?do=LearnMore.

To learn more about VPN, go to http://www.alliancedatacom.com/how-vpn-works.asp and http://computer.howstuffworks.com/vpn.htm

As long as your broadband connect card is actually a PCMCIA card and not a USB modem then yes.

With one of the below routers all you do is plug the connect card into a slot on the router, configure the router with your username and password and there you go.

to connect two computers(in two different closely locations)on to one broad band Internet connection using a wireless card and access point, NB: the Access point and the Wireless card transmit/receive Fcy has to be the same ? please direct me to hook up this set up,thank you very much for helping me, I am a Novice.plgperera.

your access point will plug into your modem via Ethernet cable, it should start working immediately. you will then have to install the wireless cards into the computer if they aren’t already in there. If you installed the wireless cards yourself then there’s a good chance that you will need to install drivers so if the cards came with disk run that on the computer. also the cards will have to be compatible with the access point, usually defined by "wireless a, b or g" or "802.11b", "802.11a" or "802.11g", the boxes that wireless cards and the access point came in should have this written on them or else the actually product should have it somewhere on there. the access point will probably be compatible with 2 or all 3 of the frequencies. when all this is done the computer should search for wireless networks when the cards are activated (if not go into the control panel and find the "network and sharing centre" or something else to do with the networks if that’s not there). when you connect your wireless may ask for a password or key depending on your security settings. hope i helped, i went through the whole process because i didn’t know where you were up to.
